Rim Brakes. This type of brake  applies its frictional force on the rim of the rotating wheel to slow the bike down. There have been many types of Rim Brakes throughout the years including Rod brakes , single pivot side pull caliper brakes, centre pull caliper brakes and dual pivot caliper brakes which are used on most modern Road racing bikes. Other types of rim brakes such as U brakes and V brakes which are used on BMX bikes and Mountain bikes.

Disc Brakes. These consist of a metal disc attached to the hub, calipers attached to the frame or fork legs with pads that squeeze together on the disc. The main advantage of disc brakes is that they perform equally well in all weather conditions.
There are two types of disc brakes. The less expensive Mechanical disc brakes which use regular brake cable and levers to actuate the pads and Hydraulic disc brakes which use fluid from a reservoir pushed through a hose to actuate the pistons which in turn actuate the pads to contact the disc and stop the bike.
